On 17th of May, the Chiefs of UML and Maoists Centre, Nepal announced the merger of their two parties and the formation of a new party- called Communist Party of Nepal. The day also marked the 25th anniversary of late Madan Bhandari of UML who died in a car accident though many still believe that he died under suspicious circumstances.

In an earlier update (no. 360 dated 23rd feb.) we had referred to PM Oli’s statement on Indo-Nepal Relations.  We had said that what was more troubling was the open, brazen and arrogant declaration of Oli that he would be able to get more leverage from India by getting closer to China.  Though we criticised the statement, it looks that Oli was perhaps right in his assessment on relations with India.

Nepal: Madhesi Groups Splitting Again? - Update No. 361

Ever since the General election results were known, both the Madhesi groups have been in talks with the UML leaders for joining the government provided their basic bottom line demand of amending the constitution is accepted. We had also in the updates said that it is in the interest of the Madhesis and in the larger interest of stability of the country that the two groups join the government.

K.P.Oli, the chairman of the UML and now the 41st Prime Minister Nepal, in an interview with the South China Morning Post, Hongkong made three very significant points in Nepal’s relations with China and India.  These were 
 
1.  He wants to deepen the ties with China to explore more options and get more leverage in dealing with India and in keeping with the times.
