With the international attention on the ongoing Rohingya crisis and Suu Kyi under pressure from all sides, it is but natural that the peace process which is very vital for the country’s stability has taken the back seat. It is said that the third Panglong Conference is unlikely to be held in end November as envisaged.

In his one day stop at the capital of Myanmar on 15 November 2017, US Secretary of State Tillersen ruled out the much expected announcement of general sanctions against Myanmar. Instead, he called for an independent investigation into credible reports of the army initiated violence against the Rohingyas. He was wise enough to point out that by imposing sanctions alone the crisis cannot be expected to be considered to be over.

The West Bengal Government’s intervention in the ritual of the immersion of Goddess Durga idol on the day when it coincided with the Moharram procession of Muslims and subsequent orders of the Kolkata High Court countermanding it shows that the minority politics (read vote bank politics) is growing strong even in a progressive State like West Bengal.
